What is Snip, the news platform, and how do you make money with it? I have a bit of experience with this site, so I’ve decided to whip out a quick review. That being said, let’s jump into things.
UPDATE (Sept. 2018): Snip Is No Longer Rewarding Those Who Write News Stories
Snip Today: The Basics
Snip is a news website that allows regular people (non-journalists, regular internet users etc. . .) to join and write news articles, with the potential to earn money. People also just go there to check out the content, but I’m assuming there are tons of writers on there. The idea behind the site is to show short pieces of content, known as snippets, to those who use the website. This means you’ll be publishing short news articles of around 100-150 words.
As for who can join as a writer, it appears pretty much anybody can. I couldn’t really find anything on country restriction. You don’t need to be a skilled writer or journalist too. If you enjoy whipping up news articles, then you’ll probably enjoy writing news articles on Snip.
How Does Snip Pay
As of now, Snip pays either in Ethereum or USD. I chose to get paid in US Dollars because I really had no interest in getting paid in ETH. This means you need to have an Ethereum address to receive your ETH coins or a PayPal account to receive your dollars, if you made the threshold amount, which is $5.
What Can You Write About
It’s classed as a news website, where news is summarized. You can write about anything in the news. It can be world news, business, science and so on. If you write about news that doesn’t fall under their main categories, then choose ‘misc.’
Snip Today has their own crypto coin/token, it’s called the Snip Coin. I actually don’t know how you can earn them, but I believe (not 100% sure) you can buy the coin on some exchanges.
There’s a number of features that Snip has. The top features that I think standout the most are:
1. The Leaderboard- When you go to write a news article on the site, you’ll notice to the right that there is a ‘leaderboard,’ which displays the top writers’ earnings. There’re daily earnings and weekly earnings. When I was writing for Snip, I personally never made it onto the leaderboard.
2. Top Stories- This feature is actually very cool and helpful. You can browse the top stories section for ideas on what to write about. There are various pieces you’ll find there, so finding something that interests you shouldn’t be too difficult.
3. Search Images- It’s exactly what it sounds like, you search images that you can use for your news articles. Simply type in what you’re looking for, choose the photo you want to use and you’re good to go. Snip has made it incredibly easy to find and use images for articles.
There’s other features the site has. But those are the ones I liked the most when I was using the site.
The Pros: What I Like About Snip
Basically, there are two main things that I really like about the site, besides what I have mentioned in the features section. Those two things are:
. The ETH or USD Option- I like you can choose between getting paid in Ethereum or US Dollars. If you’re into the whole cryptocurrency thing, then getting paid in ETH may be for you, otherwise you’d likely prefer getting paid in USD.
. Easy To Use- The site is easy to use, and the signup process was fast. I can’t remember the process step by step, but I remember it was very quick and only needed to provide basic info, such as PayPal email (I chose to get paid in USD).
The Cons: What I Don’t Really Like About Snip
There’s only a handful of things I’m not really a fan of. This includes:
. Making Money Isn’t Guaranteed- Just like any revenue sharing site, which I consider Snip to be, making money is not guaranteed. You can write a ton of news articles and still make nothing. That’s just the nature of the beast.
. No Way To See Traffic- There’s noway to check on traffic stats. You can’t see how many people viewed a specific article. I think it would be nice if Snip could allow users to do this.
. Multiple Articles About The Same Topic- Another thing I really didn’t like is multiple articles on the same topic could be written and publish. I think it would be better if writers on Snip could only choose an article that hasn’t been covered yet.
My Personal Experience With Snip
I have nothing against Snip. I made a bit of money, but not enough to have made me want to stick around and put in maximum effort. Some news articles I wrote only made $0.50, while a few made a tad more than that, but then the articles I published weren’t making anything at all.
When I was using Snip, they paid out on Tuesdays, and I did receive my payout multiple times. I’m not sure how or when they pay out in ETH because I choose getting paid in USD.
Do I Recommend Snip
I say it doesn’t hurt to give it a try. It’s free to join and I remember the entire signup process being fast. I suggest writing a few news articles for Snip, see how you like it and whether you actually earn something. Stick with it for 2-3 weeks and see how you go.
Me personally, it wasn’t worth the effort. I earn money online various ways, and it just wasn’t worth it for me. Don’t get me wrong, I like the platform and the overall layout of Snip, but it’s not for me. Good luck if you decide to give it a try.
Update: Snip No Longer Offers Rewards
It appears Snip is no longer offering rewards for stories. In short, in looks like you can’t earn anything writing for them. Unfortunately, they probably ran into the same issue that many revenue sharing sites run into; The model became unsustainable.
